Embodied Flow™: The Embodied Science of Yoga.

The journey into yoga is one of ever-expanding awareness.  For years and years, I practice. Then a student/ friend revolutionized my practice and understanding by introducing me to the world of Body Mind Centering ™ (BMC).    My friend said, “Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen is the best bridge between an awake, embodied being I have ever met.”  That was enough to open the wormhole.

As I had been on an endless search for those two things, I set about the next 5 years studying with anyone and everyone I could get to follow deeper into this journey of consciousness in the body.  I studied with Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen, a living master and revolutionary of embodiment practices, and her protégés Amy Matthews and Scott Lyons.

Cohen began as an occupational therapist and a dancer, who made her life work studying multiple systems of movement in order to learn to heal and unravel the body from the “felt sense of being.”  From 1962-1972 she worked as a therapist in hospitals and rehabilitation centers while studying and teaching dance in New York.  People coming to her were able to make remarkable recoveries.  At the time unable to articulate exactly what she was doing- but with an innocent curiosity, Cohen began studying various system. She trained with a neuro developmental therapist with the Bobaths in England, working with children with severe brain dysfunction. She studied neur-omuscular reeducation with Barbara Clark and Andre Bernard, Katsugen Undu (“The art of training the nervous system”) with Haruchi Noguchi in Japan, Laban Movement Analysis and Bartenieff  Fundamentals with Irmgard Bartenieff.  Her studies have continued to deepen through a wide range of  movement practices including yoga, meditation, martial arts, cranial sacral therapy and vocal work.

Studying BMC at first posed a huge problem to my Anusara™ trained teaching.  It allowed movement with ease and flow and a huge, scintillating net of awareness, presence that refused to dictate or superimpose instruction on a body.  Rather it continuously invites you in to the deeper felt sense of your body in order to remember everything that you are.  Through years of trial and error and “Practice Labs” with dedicated students, I have worked to find the middle ground through leading a hatha yoga class and infusing that class with the embodied anatomy practices from BMC.  The result is Embodied Flow™ a yoga practices that infuses the biomechanics and alignment of my Anusara background, and the philosophy of Tantra with the embodiment practices inspired by the work of Cohen.
